I’ve never done this before. This whole choose-a-word-for-the-year thing. But I think it’s time. And this one has been being whispered to my heart for awhile now. I laughed it off because it definitely would be the last word that comes to mind if I were asked to describe myself.
If you know me at all, you might be laughing right now. I am a loud, type-a, charge ahead, take no prisoners kinda gal. I am just not gentle. Unfortunately, this has trickled it’s way down to my four daughters. I listen to them talk to each other sometimes and hear myself. Only not the good moments – the ungentle ones with the harsh tone and stomped feet.
I’ll often find myself calling out ‘Gently, girls!’ as they’re talking or doing chores. But it was just recently that I realized that the Lord is telling me the same thing.
Gently, Jackie. There are young, moldable hearts here in your home.
Gently, daughter. He’s tired, too.
Gently. My mercies are new every morning.
So I’m stepping out in this trendy thing called #OneWord2016. Trendy things are not my favorite. I usually avoid them, if possible. But this is more from God than just me jumping on a bandwagon. Have you ever chosen a word for your year? How did you keep it fresh in your mind all year long?
So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.
