{review & giveaway} All Things Bright and Beautiful

All Things Bright and Beautiful

thumbnail_9780824956769 About the book:

First published by Cecil Frances Alexander in 1848, this favorite hymn has become a mainstay of churches and Sunday school classes everywhere. Here artist Katy Hudson brings new joy to the words with her fresh and bright watercolor style. Readers can join in the fun as they follow two little girls and their brother on a day filled with the discovery of “all things bright and beautiful.”

About the artist:

Katy Hudson was raised in Middlesbrough, England, and started her career as a small child drawing on freshly painted walls. Her parents quickly encouraged drawing with pencil and paper instead. The idea stuck, and after earning a degree in illustration, Katy is now a freelance illustrator. Katy works at a desk in a studio within Old London Library and likes to tap dance in her spare time.

Our thoughts:

What a gorgeous book! I was unfamiliar with this hymn and this book is a lovely introduction. With sweet illustrations that play beautifully with the verse on each page, my five year old and I enjoy reading this book very much. Big and small? Let’s look for the biggest and smallest thing! Flowers, birds, rives, mountains, sunny breezes. Which part of the picture are we reading about? Which animal is wise? The beautiful illustrations reinforce the words of this classic hymn. A hymn that is just as true today as it was in 1848 – God created everything! All of these beautiful things around us are not an accident or an evolution. They are purposeful creations of our almighty God, just as each little hand that holds this book. What an important message for our children!

{review & giveaway} Wonders of Creation

Moms. Let’s chat for a minute. Summer is coming. We need some time to relax and recharge, just as much as our kids do. Maybe even a bit more than they do! There are lots of ways to do this. Naps. Reading. Lazy days in the garden or at the beach. And my most recent addition to my relaxation list – coloring. I was thrilled to see this beautiful new coloring book available from Zondervan for review and I’m super thrilled to have a copy to give away! The details about the book first:

Slow down, relax, and contemplate God’s amazing world in this coloring book featuring detailed black-and-white illustrations of the animals, landscapes, and other wonders of creation. Appeals to all ages looking for a unique coloring experience. Wonders of Creation explores the wonders of our created world though detailed black-and-white illustrations—each one ready to be filled with the hues of your imagination. From amazing Eden-esque gardens to the creatures God made that still ramble through our world, this ninety-six-page book offers hours of coloring inspiration and relaxation for any age.

Because who wouldn’t want to color in this cute raccoon face?!

The cover of Wonders of Creation is heavy and embossed with beautiful colors. The pages are equally as thick, to allow for several different coloring options.

Some pages are very detailed, while some have more open space. I appreciate this because sometimes my eyes just cannot handle the very small details of the drawings! And I love that there are drawings of pretty much every type of animal, so everyone has their favorite represented.

Dirty dishes overflow the sink. Your two youngest kids just began their third round of hand-to-hand combat today. And now the washing machine won’t start. Visions of putting a home-cooked meal in the oven while the family plays happily in the living room evaporate amid screaming, complaining, and slammed doors-and that’s not even counting what the children are doing. Lisa Pennington knows what those days are like. And she knows that even in the hard times you can find immense joy. In Mama Needs a Do-Over, Lisa offers hopeful, practical ideas for resetting your family’s mood in the toughest moments. She also dives deep into your mother’s heart to show you the power you have to turn those challenges into gifts. A little fun, a new perspective, and a go-to list for those do-over days, and you might just find joy in all those dirty dishes after all!

Does any of that sound like a day you’ve had? C’mon now, be honest. We have all had our share of bad days and temper tantrums. As much as we really want our days to be full of peace and joy – we have to contend with our flesh, our selfishness, our sin nature, and that’s all before we get out of bed! {review & giveaway} The Story of God’s Love For You

I don’t know any good ways to start this review apart from saying dramatic, blanket statements like, ‘If you love Jesus, you need to have this book in your collection.’ or ‘Just go buy it. Like now.’

The Story Of God’s Love For You by Sally Lloyd-Jones is the retelling of the same stories found in The Jesus Storybook Bible. A wonderfully readable font (am I the only one that notices that stuff?!), a simple graphic at the beginning of each chapter, along with the Bible references for each story that’s told — it’s your favorite story, written just for you.

Maybe I’m the only one that’s struggled with this but I’ll confess it any way. Sometimes I just need to read something that is easier to understand and speaks right to my tired heart. Yes, the Bible does that I know, but sometimes I want to read about the simple truth of God’s love. Something that will pour fresh water on a parched soul, for those days that combining words into sentences feels like a struggle. Have you ever been there? When you’re too tired or worn out to even think but you know you need more of Jesus.

This is the book for those days.

“Suddenly, it was as if someone had drawn back curtains in a dark room, as if heaven itself had opened, because a beautiful light broke through the clouds and shone down on to Jesus, bathing him in gold…

Heaven had broken through.

The Great Rescue had begun.”

Has anyone else been there? Feeling like you need a Great Rescue? Have you found yourself to be enthralled with your child’s Jesus Storybook Bible? Now you can have your own copy! Mine has stayed on my desk, where I’ve grabbed it for a short break to recenter my heart when I’m feeling edgy. But The Story of God’s Love For You is a great addition to a daily devotional time or even family Bible time if you have older children.

Sally Lloyd-Jones has a gift with words. She tells Bible stories in such a beautiful way, every member of your family will find it interesting and refreshing. The Story Of God’s Love For You is for every person that has found themselves borrowing their children’s Jesus Storybook Bible and every person that’s never read either. If you love Jesus, you should find a spot on your bookshelf for this one.

I am so, so happy to be able to give one copy of The Story of God’s Love For You by Sally Lloyd-Jones to one reader. To enter, please leave a comment telling me what your favorite Bible translation is. I’m an NKJV gal but I love reading The Message to get a different perspective on verses.

The giveaway will end on October 27 at 8pm and is opened to all residents of the Continental US. Winner will be notified by email, so please leave a current email address. Winner will have 48 hours to respond or I will choose another winner. This review and giveaway are sponsored by Zondervan. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This giveaway has now ended. The winner was comment #8 – Michael!
